Supported Independent Living
Supported Independent Living, commonly called SIL, is support delivered in a participant’s home for people who require substantial assistance with daily activities. The support is designed around assessed needs and may include regular daytime support, shared support and overnight arrangements where these are approved.

Support May Include
- Support with personal activities, routines and household responsibilities.
- Meal preparation, grocery routines and assistance to maintain the home.
- Skill development for communication, decision-making and everyday living.
- Support to attend appointments and access the community as agreed.
- Implementation of documented behaviour, health and risk-management strategies.
- Overnight support arrangements when approved and included in the service model.

SIL requires careful planning. We work with the participant and their chosen supporters to understand staffing needs, routines, compatibility, risks, communication, household responsibilities and the outcomes the participant wants from their living arrangement. Support delivery and accommodation arrangements are explained clearly before commencement.
Supported Independent Living Questions
Is SIL the same as Specialist Disability Accommodation?
No. SIL relates to the support provided in the home. Specialist Disability Accommodation, or SDA, relates to eligible specialist housing. A participant may have one, both or neither, depending on their assessed needs and approved plan.
Do I have to live with other participants?
Not automatically. The appropriate living arrangement depends on your approved supports, preferences, compatibility, available housing and the service model. These matters should be discussed before any agreement is made.
Does SIL always mean a support worker is beside me all day?
No. Staffing and support intensity are based on assessed needs and the approved arrangement. The aim is to provide the right assistance while supporting choice, privacy and independence.
