How to Apply for the NDIS in South Australia: A Step-by-Step Guide

Applying for the NDIS can feel daunting, but the process is more straightforward than it first appears. This guide walks you through each step as it works in South Australia, from checking eligibility to receiving your first plan.

Step 1: Check you're eligible

To access the NDIS you generally need to be under 65 when you apply, an Australian citizen, permanent resident or Protected Special Category Visa holder, and have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities. If you're over 65, in-home support is available through the aged care system instead — and providers like Aureonrise support both.

Step 2: Make an Access Request

Call the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on 1800 800 110 and ask to make an Access Request, or download and complete the Access Request Form. You can also ask a family member, friend or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to help — LAC services across Adelaide assist with applications at no cost.

Step 3: Gather your evidence

The strongest applications include recent reports from your GP and any specialists that describe your disability, how long it will last, and how it affects your daily life. Ask your doctors to be specific about functional impact — what you can and can't do without support — rather than just listing diagnoses.

Step 4: Wait for the decision

The NDIA must decide within 21 days of receiving a complete application. If they need more information, they'll ask — respond quickly to keep things moving. If access is approved, you'll be invited to a planning meeting.

Step 5: Prepare for your planning meeting

  • Write down your goals — what you want to achieve at home, in the community, with health or work.
  • Keep a one-week diary of the support you currently receive from family and friends.
  • List the supports you think you need, including equipment.
  • Bring a family member, advocate or support person if you'd like.

Once your plan is approved, you choose your providers. If you'd like a hand understanding what your plan funds — or you're ready to start supports in Adelaide — our team offers a free, no-obligation plan review.
