Plain-English guide
Understanding the NDIS
The National Disability Insurance Scheme funds supports for hundreds of thousands of Australians with disability — but the paperwork can feel like another language. Here's the plain-English version, from our Adelaide team.
The NDIS in a nutshell
The NDIS is Australia's national scheme for funding disability supports, run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). It supports more than 750,000 participants nationally. If you're eligible, you receive an individual plan with funding tailored to your goals — and you choose who provides your supports.

NDIS questions, answered simply
Who is eligible for the NDIS?
Generally, you may be eligible if you're under 65 when you apply, live in Australia as a citizen, permanent resident or Protected Special Category Visa holder, and have a permanent and significant disability that affects your everyday life.
What's the difference between Core, Capacity Building and Capital supports?
Core supports fund everyday assistance (personal care, community access, consumables). Capacity Building funds supports that build skills and independence (therapy, employment help). Capital funds equipment and home or vehicle modifications.
What does agency-managed, plan-managed and self-managed mean?
It's about who pays the invoices. Agency-managed means the NDIA pays registered providers directly. Plan-managed means a plan manager pays providers for you (you can use registered and unregistered providers). Self-managed means you handle the funds and claims yourself, with the most flexibility.
Can I change providers if I'm unhappy?
Yes — choice and control is a core NDIS principle. Check your service agreement's notice period, then your new provider (like Aureonrise) can help manage the transition smoothly.
I'm over 65. What are my options?
If you entered the NDIS before turning 65 you can choose to stay with it. Otherwise, supports for over-65s are provided through the aged care system — and Aureonrise provides private in-home care for older South Australians too.
How do I apply for the NDIS in South Australia?
Call the NDIA on 1800 800 110 or complete an Access Request Form, with evidence from your GP or specialists about your disability. Local Area Coordinators across Adelaide can help you apply at no cost.
