Agency, Plan or Self-Managed? Your NDIS Plan Management Options

Every NDIS plan is managed in one of three ways — and the option you choose affects which providers you can use, how invoices get paid, and how much paperwork lands on your kitchen table.

Agency-managed (NDIA-managed)

The NDIA pays your providers directly. It's the lowest-admin option, but you can only use NDIS-registered providers, and you have less visibility over your budget day-to-day. A good fit if you want simplicity and your preferred providers are registered.

Plan-managed

A plan manager — funded by the NDIS at no cost to you — receives invoices, pays providers and tracks your budget. You can use both registered and unregistered providers, and you'll usually get monthly statements. This is the most popular option for many families because it balances flexibility with low admin.

Self-managed

You (or your nominee) claim directly from the NDIS portal and pay providers yourself. Maximum flexibility — you can negotiate rates and use any provider — but you're responsible for record-keeping, paying invoices on time, and staying within budget.

Can I mix options?

Yes. Plans can be split — for example, Core supports plan-managed while Capacity Building is agency-managed. You can also change your management type at a plan review, or request an early review if your current arrangement isn't working.

Aureonrise works with all three management types across Adelaide. If you're unsure what your plan says, bring it to a free consultation and we'll walk through it together.
